A maths based activity to encourage children to co-operate, empathise and work as a team

1. The students work in groups of three. Write numbers to the cards for each trio; the sum of the three numbers must be 100 (e.g., 1, 29, 70 or 23, 26, 51). If the number of students in the class does not allow splitting them into groups of three, adjust the sums, for instance, in one case the sum of 100 will be split into four cards. Mix the cards.
2. Have the students stand in a circle back to back. All of them close their eyes.
3. Stick a card with a random number to each student’s forehead.
4. The students open their eyes and move freely in the class (confined area).
5. They are asked not to talk and form groups of three so that the sum of their numbers is one hundred (if required, inform them that one group of four is to be formed).
6. Talking is prohibited during the whole activity.
7. The game ends after all the students form the groups of three.

What could have been done differently or is planned for future repeats?

Advise the students frequently that talking is prohibited. Explain to them that if they violate this requirement, the activity loses its purpose. The activity may finish quickly if the group contains a leader who counts everything.
