Relax kids

Classes for young people from 5 to 18 years improving confidence, concentration, creativity and teaching relaxation techniques

Relax Kids is a national organisation and operates as a franchise.  They currently have 2823 coaches worldwide with the majority in the UK.  The aim is to equip children and young people with techniques which will help them cope with stress, enable them to remain calm and improve their confidence, ability to concentrate and self-esteem.

The course is delivered via a series of weekly 40 minutes sessions, usually in school/college settings.  Schools buy the service and can choose which children to offer the course to.  Some have delivered to a whole year group while others have selected those they feel will most benefit.

The course includes fun activities and games through which children are encouraged to think positively about themselves and develop techniques to help them deal with stress and strong emotions.

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council saw the potential benefits of the course for children’s educations attainment and wellbeing and offered to fund 6 weeks of classes for primary schools in the borough.  The response has been extremely positive, with a number of schools choosing to then buy in further sessions having seen the positive impact on the children taking part.

How was it funded?

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council funded a 6 week course and schools then choose whether to buy in more classes after this.

Time needed

Courses are delivered by trained staff, no preparation time for schools.

What could have been done differently or is planned for future repeats?

The cost of buying in the course is a potential barrier.  Although the schools in Basingstoke who have taken part have seen the value in terms of the benefits to the students who have taken part.

How was or could the project be sustained?

The increasing interest in supporting young people to cope with stress has meant that Relax Kids continues to grow nationally.

Schools could however adapt resources and identify existing staff to deliver future sessions.

“The course helped me cope with my severe anxiety and has allowed me to remain calm in times of panic. I will utilise these techniques in exam season.”
