Using the Lord of the Flies to illustrate determination and empathy

1) I WOULD KILL
The students are asked to read the chapter at home. They work independently trying to decide which animal they would be able to kill and under what circumstances. They fill the following table:

human
2) MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE
The students are asked to choose one character (Ralph, Jack, Piggy, Simon or another boy), but not reveal who. Then they should write a message home from the viewpoint of the character, specifying where they are; how they feel; what they’ve experienced so far; what they miss the most; what they do and do not like on the island; and what they want their parents to do.
Other students try and guess the character.

What could have been done differently or is planned for future repeats?

The students were embarrassed by the first activity, but in the end, they performed well after being told that situations can occur in life where it is necessary to decide.
The second task was fulfilled by the students far better than expected, because at the time, they were well acquainted with the plot and the characters and could easily empathise with the protagonists and see the world with their eyes.
